ZATOICHI MEETS YOJIMBO (zatoichi vs. yojimbo; zatoichi to yojimbo) (1970 JAPAN) D/W: KIHACHI OKAMOTO W: TETSURO YOSHIDA P: SHINATRO KATSU
Ichi (Katsu) returns to a fondly remembered village from his past for rest and recuperation. But the place has become and oppressed, lifeless town full of Yakuza. Toshiro Mifune is a Yojimbo (bodyguard) that is not the same character from Akira Kurosawa`s classic YOJIMBO, but by this point in the series the image of Zatoichi could be played around with more and gimmicks like this were employed. But that`s not to say that the self parody is any more than very subtle, and never intrusive. It`s just another high quality entry in this top-drawer series. With Ayako Wakao (MANJI), Osamu Takizawa, Shin Kishida, Shigeru Koyama, Kenjuro Arashi, Minori Terada, Fujio Tokita, Gen Kimura and Hideo Sunazuka. Okamoto had just directed Mifune in RED LION. The next entry was THE BLIND SWORDMAN`S FIRE FESTIVAL.
