X-MEN: THE LAST STAND (2006 U.S. U.K.) D: BRETT RATNER W: SIMON KINBERG/ZAK PENN P: AVI ARAD/LAUREN SHULER DONNER/RALPH WINTER
Third in a good summer FX sci-fi adventure extravaganza series based on Marvel comics about superhero mutants and their struggle to be accepted by normal society. Patrick Stewart is their psychic teacher, and Ian McKellen is Magneto, a powerful telekinetic with magnetic powers who bands together rebel mutants to lead an assault on mankind. A new drug that can suppress mutation is what drives the plot this time, and there`s plenty of action. With regulars Hugh Jackman (as Wolverine), Halle Berry, Famke Janssen, James Marsden, Anna Paquin, Rebecca Romjin and Shawn Ashmore, plus Vinnie Jones, a blue unrecognisable Kelsey Grammer, Aaron Stanford, Ben Foster, Ellen Page Michael Murphy, Bill Duke, Josef Sommer, Daria Ramirez, Julian Richings, Ken Leung, Anthony Heald, John Pyper-Ferguson, the usual Stan Lee cameo and the voice of R. Lee Ermey. The first two were helmed by Bryan Singer, who handed the chores over to Ratner while he made an even higher profile superhero movie, SUPERMAN RETURNS. X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE followed.
