TWO LANE BLACKTOP (1971 U.S.) D: MONTE HELLMAN W: RUDY WURLITZER/WILL CORY/FLOYD MUTRUX (uncredited) P: MICHAEL S. LAUGHLIN
Real-life musicians James Taylor and Dennis Wilson star as The Driver and The Mechanic, a pretty quiet pair who drive and race their `55 Chevy across the Southwest. Laurie Bird is The Girl, a hitchhiker who just climbs in the back of their car. They hook up with lying, chatty Warren Oates, a G.T.O. driving drifter and challenge him to a cross-country race. Oates (who had been in Hellman`s THE SHOOTING) is brilliant in this unique box office flop road movie that has (deservedly) gained a cult following over the years. It ends with the film just burning in the projector. With Alan Vint, Jim Mitchum, Harry Dean Stanton and Wurlitzer. Mutrux made the underrated ALOHA, BOBBY AND ROSE.
