TORTURE GARDEN (1967 U.K.) D: FREDDIE FRANCIS W: ROBERT BLOCH P: MAX ROSENBERG/MILTON SUBOTSKY
Mediocre Amicus anthology has carny barker Dr. Diablo (Burgess Meredith) inviting some curious customers to witness their futures (by staring at an old crone with some shears). The first tale has hidden treasure, missing heads and a psychic cat. The second is an interesting concept concerning Hollywood and longevity, but doesn't really cut it. The third has a haunted piano. Jack Palance and Peter Cushing are in the fourth as avid collectors of Edgar Allan Poe originals. Palance is real jittery and over-the-top. This is the most interesting segment because of the two stars, but is still unsatisfying. With Michael Ripper, Beverly Adams, Robert Hutton, John Standing, Maurice Denham and Niall MacGinnis. Amicus anthology fans (and who isn't?) should enjoy the last shot. The next Amcus stab at this sort of thing was THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD.
