THEY LIVE (1988 U.S.) D/W: JOHN CARPENTER P: LARRY FRANCO
Roddy Piper discovers a resistance network who have special sunglasses that show America as it really is. Aliens disguised as humans are asset-stripping the planet of humans while putting up billboards and tv transmissions with subliminal messages like "obey" and "stay asleep". These b/w looks at reality are excellent, as is the first half of this anti-Republican sci-fi action movie. Unfortunately mid-way through the film a ridicilously extended fist fight signals an all-out switch to endless aimless running around and shooting with none of the first half`s wit or originality. Unsurprising as the original story it`s based on (by Ray Faraday Nelson, it`s quite excellent) was only a few pages long, and feature length required padding. But if you`re prepared for the unsatisfying conclusion you should definetely check this out. Half of it is Carpenter`s best movie since THE THING. With Keith David, Meg Foster, Sy Richardson, George "Buck" Flower, Raymond St. Jacques, Peter Jason, Jason Robards III, Norman Alden and Franco.
