THE WARRIORS (1979 U.S.) D/W: WALTER HILL W: DAVID SHABER P: LAWRENCE GORDON
This is one of the great gang movies, a cult hit that`s remembered by all who see it. A small-time gang from Coney Island travel to Central Park in Manhattan for a big gang meeting. They`re framed for the murder of gang overlord Cyrus and have to make it back to their own turf without getting killed by other gangs. Hill wisely decided to forego realism for a more mythical approach. There`s very good location use of the N.Y.C. underground and the underrated David Patrick Kelley is more memorable as the villain ("warriors, come out to play-i-ay") than any of the leads. With Michael Beck (XANADU), James Remar, Steve James, Irwin Keyes and Craig R. Baxley. Based on a novel by Sol Yurick.
