THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE (subway panic) (1974 U.S.) D: JOSEPH SARGENT W: PETER STONE P: GABRIEL KATZKA/EDGAR J. SCHERICK
Four men with machine guns (Robert Shaw, Martin Balsam, Hector Elizondo and Earl Hindman) hijack a New York subway train and hold a carriage full of passengers hostage in the middle of a tunnel. Walter Matthau stars as a transit cop and Julius W. Harris is a city cop. Based on John Godey`s novel, it`s one of the best crime capers of the 70`s with a tight, suspenseful script that brings out all the interesting social, racial and political angles. It`s very funny at times. David Shire`s score is excellent too. With Dick O`Neill, Jerry Stiller, Kenneth McMillan, Doris Roberts, Tony Roberts, Nathan George and Bill Cobbs. There was a terrible remake in 1996 and another in 2009.
