THE ST. VALENTINE'S DAY MASSACRE (1967 U.S.) D/P: ROGER CORMAN W: HOWARD BROWNE
Corman look at how the gang war between Al Capone (Jason Robards)'s organization and Bugs Moran (Ralph Meeker)'s Northside mob led to the title mass murder of 1929. Narrator Paul Frees tells us who everybody is and what they're up to. Not bad, but pretty standard stuff with no Corman quirks, and lacking his usual pace. But check out the cast: George Segal, Bruce Dern, Harold J. Stone, John Agar, Richard Bakalyan, Joseph Campanella, Joe Turkel, Milton Frome, Alex D'Arcy, Gus Trikonis, Alex Rocco, Reed Hadley, Tom Signorelli, Dick Miller, Leo Gordon, Jack Nicholson, Russ Conway and Dale Van Sickel. A scene with a baseball bat (based on a true incident) was later copied in De Palma's THE UNTOUCHABLES. Monte Hellman was Dialogue Director.
