THE MASSACRE (1912 U.S.) D/W: D.W. GRIFFITH
In this 30 min. b/w silent western, Cavalry soldiers attack an Indian village, and survivors later lead a revenge raid on a wagon train. What`s most surprising for a modern audience is that the sympathies lie equally with both groups, the senseless cycle of violence being the villain of the piece. As with countless Griffith films, it`s an early textbook of how-to filmmaking for up `n` coming movie-makers (he also shot it). With Wilfred Lucas, Blanche Sweet, Lionel Barrymore, Charles West, Alfred Paget, Charles Craig, Edward Dillon, Charles Gorman, Robert Harron, Dell Henderson, Harry Hyde, J. Liquel Lanoe, Charles Hill Mailes, Claire McDowell, W. Chrystie Miller, Frank Opperman, Jack Pickford, W.C. Robinson and Kate Toncray.
