THE MASK (1994 U.S.) D: CHUCK RUSSELL W: MIKE WERB/MICHAEL FALLON/MARK VERHEIDEN P: BOB ENGELMAN
Jim Carrey is a cartoon-loving nice guy loser who finds a magical mask that contains the spirit of the Norse God of mischief. When he puts it on he transforms into a hyperkinetic cartoonish superhero with a green face. The things he does (through the use of excellent ILM FX) are inspired by Tex Avery cartoons. There are song and dance numbers, and a HELLZAPOPPIN`-style reality interference. Peter Greene is the bad guy gangster who also wears the mask, and Cameron Diaz co-stars as the love interest. With Peter Riegert, Richard Jeni, Ben Stein and Nils Allen Stewart in this surprisingly enjoyable hit that apparently also borrows from the 1961 3D movie of the same name. It`s officialy based on a Dark Horse comic. Russell (who made the good BLOB remake) was also an Executive Producer. Followed by SON OF THE MASK.
