THE MACK (1973 U.S.) D: MICHAEL CAMPUS W: ROBERT J. POOLE P: HARVEY BERNHARD
Max Julien is excellent as a street punk who gets out from a five year stretch in jail and aims to be a highly succesful pimp. He starts off by hanging out at a pimps hairdressers to earwig information, and ascends to the rank of "Mack of the year" at a pimp convention. Don Gordon is also a great villain, a corrupt, racist beat cop with a fetish for fat black prostitutes. With Richard Pryor, Carol Speed, Roger E. Mosley, Christopher Brooks (from Fredric Hobbs movies), George Murdock, Juanita Moore, Dick Anthony Williams and June Wilkinson. A classic of it`s kind, with loads of memorable scenes (the god like planetarium hooker pledge being my favourite) and a great score from Willie Hutch (replaced on some prints). It was a major hit and deserved to be. Screenwriter Poole was not a real life pimp as is sometimes claimed, but was an ex-con who knew "the life".
