THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (1960 U.S.) D/P: ROGER CORMAN W: CHARLES B. GRIFFITH
Jonathan Haze is Seymour Krelboine, a poor kid working in Mel Welles` florist shop in Skid Row who grows a carnivorous plant (Audrey Jr.) that drinks blood and eats human flesh. Haze ends up killing people to feed the growing plant (that talks). This cult favourite black comedy is fun but no classic. With Jackie Joseph as Audrey, Dick Miller (originally cast for the lead who turned it down because he though it was too similar to his Walter Paisley role in the classic A BUCKET OF BLOOD) who eats flowers, a funny small role by Jack Nicholson as a giggling masochist, radio star Myrtle Vail and Griffith in a number of small roles. Apparently Welles and Griffiths were responsible for much of the direction, but Corman got the sole credit. Harry Thomas did the make-up and Daniel Haller was the art director. A 1982 off-Broadway stage version became a film in 1986, and there`s also PLEASE DON`T EAT MY MOTHER.
