THE KILLING (1956 U.S.) D/W: STANLEY KUBRICK P: JAMES B. HARRIS
This b/w stone-cold heist-gone-wrong classic with DRAGNET-style narration is essential viewing. Sterling Hayden stars in the documentary style tale of a race-track robbery, but it`s Timothy Carey that steals the show as a horse-killing racist sniper. With femme-fatale Marie Windsor, Coleen Gray, Elisha Cook Jr. (who looks even more worried than usual), Joseph Sawyer, Jay C. Flippen, Vince Edwards, Ted De Corsia, Joseph Turkel, Dorothy Adams, James Griffith, Billy Benedict, Charles Cane, Robert Williams, Art Gilmore, Sol Gorss, Richard Reeves, Frank Richards and Joseph Turkel. Jim Thompson (who wrote Kubrick`s PATHS OF GLORY, also with Carey) originally adapted this for the screen from Lionel White`s Clean Break, but is only credited with "original dialogue" (read the Thompson biography Savage Art for more on this).
