THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN (1978 U.S.) D/W: WILLIAM SACHS P: SAMUEL W. GELFMAN
An astronaut (Alex Rebar) returns to Earth after a space flight and begins to melt in hospital. This makes him crazy and he escapes to go on a killing rampage. Somehow Sachs stretches this out to feature length. The most memorable part is when a fisherman's ripped-off head floats down a river and over a waterfall, splatting on the rocks below. When a guy finds a mutilated body, the cop on the scene tells him to go away without questioning him! The gooey FX (which gave it an X certificate and were often cut out) are by Rick Baker. Mostly dull but oddly endearing update of FIRST MAN INTO SPACE/QUATERMASS XPERIMENT with ideas copied from THE HIDEOUS SUN DEMON. It's hard to imagine that anyone was offended by this. With Burr De Benning, Myron Healey, Michael Aldredge, Cheryl Smith, producer Gelfman and future director Jonathan Demme! There was also a novelization. Rebar later wrote the script for the awful DEMENTED.
