THE HOUSEMAID (hanyo) (2010 S. KOREA) D/W: LIM SANG-SOO P: JASON CHAE
Not so much a remake, as a re-interpretation of Kim Ki-Young`s celebrated 1960 cult favourite, starring Jeon Do-Yeon as the new housemaid for a wealthy couple (Lee Jung-Ae and pregnant Seo Woo) who basically treat her like shit (for more non-spoiler details, see the review of the original, and then be aware that this is in similar territory). The performances (including Yun Yeo-Jong, who was in Kim Ki-Young`s own 1970 re-tread of HOUSEMAID) are excellent, the erotic set pieces are sexy and Lee Hyung-Deok`s detached prowling cinematography captures every icy, sociopathic detail. With Park Ji-Yeong and an out-of-leftfield ending and coda guaranteed to catch you off-guard. From the cynical class-war canny director of THE PRESIDENT`S LAST BANG.
