THE HILLS HAVE EYES (2006 U.S.) D/W: ALEXANDRE AJA W: GREGORY LEVASSEUR P: WES CRAVEN/PETER LOCKE/MARIANNE MADDALENA
Here`s a surprisingly good remake of Craven`s best movie, a 1977 survival-horror classic. Ted Levine drives his family (including unwelcome son-in-law Aaron Stanford) to California in a motor home via the New Mexico desert. An accident during a detour leaves them stranded in the middle of nowhere, prey to a clan of cannibal mutants deformed by radioactive fallout. The focus on the testing of A-bombs is the major difference between this and the original. Featuring brutal violence and intensity that rarely makes it to American cinema screens in such a wide release nowadays, this is a solid, gritty, big budget exploitation film, also available unrated on DVD. The hunted family are Kathleen Quinlan, Danny Byrd, Emilie de Ravin and Vinessa Shaw. The hunters, Robert Joy, Michael Bailey Smith, Desmond Askew, Ezra Burrington and an almost unrecognisable Billy Drago. With Tom Bower. The French writer/director team of Aja and Levasseur had previously made HAUTE TENSION. There was a sequel.
