THE GHASTLY ONES (blood rites) (1968 U.S.) D/W: ANDY MILLIGAN W: HAL SHERWOOD P: JEROME FREDRIC
Staten Island filmmaker Milligan was a bit more ambitious than other low-budget American exploitation directors. He churned out ultra-cheap gory quickies like others, but tried to turn them into period pieces with fairly elaborate (for the price) costumes. It's a shame that the results are so tedious. Three sisters take their husbands to a mansion on an island (complete with servants) as dictated by their late father's will. First a rabbit is killed and then the guests are murdered one by one. In Milligan's favour, his gore is very grisly looking despite it's hokiness. Writer Sherwood has a part. Milligan remade it as LEGACY OF BLOOD.
