THE FRENCH CONNECTION (1971 U.S.) D: WILLIAM FRIEDKIN W: ERNEST TIDYMAN P: PHILIP D`ANTONI
Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider are N.Y.C. cops trying to bust a drug smuggling operation masterminded by French Fernando Rey. Told in almost documentary style (no incidental music or dramatization), this is a classic, cool thriller that features great location work (particularly during that infamous car chase). It`s based on a book by Edward M. Keye and Robin Moore, itself based on a real-life event (Eddie Egan, the officer who`s work it`s modeled after has a cameo, and his then partner Sonny Rosso is in it too). With Tony Lo Bianco, Marcel Bozzuffi and The Three Degrees. A must-see. A sequel followed.
