THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN (1971 U.S.) D/P: ROBERT WISE W: NELSON GIDDING
Based on Michael Crichton`s excellent bestselling novel (the first cinematic adaptation of the late Crichton`s work) , this no-star, matter-of-fact sci-fi is pretty interesting. When a satellite crash-lands in a small New Mexico village, the inhabitants all die simultaneously with all their blood dried to powder. Apart from a new born baby and an old drunk. The majority of the film takes place in a huge underground complex with it`s own automatic self-destruct system to avoid contamination from leaking, as a team of scientists try and figure out why the survivors survived. With Arthur Hill, David Waynes, James Olson, Kate Ried, Wakter Brooke, Glenn Langan, Emory Parnell, Michael Pataki, Rord Rainey, a Crichton cameo and special photo FX from Douglas Trumbull. 130 mins. long, but utterly engrossing. THE STRAIN ANDROMEDA is an experimental film from 1992 that runs the film backwards apparently. There was a tv mini-series remake.
