SWEENEY TODD (2005 UK) D: DAVID MOORE W: JOSHUA ST. JOHNSTON P: GUB NEAL/CAROLINE HEWITT
It occasionally suffers from moments of cheap televisuals, but this BBC-backed tv movie adaptation of pre-musical Sweeney Todd lore is probably the best screen version around. Ray Winstone leads a superb cast as the butchering barber of Newgate (also a trained surgeon). Essie Davis is the pie-making Mrs. Lovett. David Warner is particularly good as a blind Magistrate. With Tom Hardy as a policeman, David Bradley as Todd's father and young Ben Walker (later in THE GOLDEN COMPASS movie) as Tobias. It was shot in Romania, and is loaded with fascinating period detail. This review refers to a 96 min. Director's Cut.
