SUSPIRIA (1977 ITALY) D/W: DARIO ARGENTO W: DARIA NICOLODI P: CLAUDIO ARGENTO
Argento's most famous feature stars Jessica Harper as a new student at a German all-girl boarding school. It turns out that a coven of witches runs the place. A little plot goes a long way due to the atmospheric lighting and music (by Goblin). A sense of dread looms over everything, culminating in vicious murders (though not as brutal as some of Argento's later offerings). A blind man's guide dog even rips his throat out. It's not the masterpiece you've been told, but it's pretty good and worth seeing on a big screen. With Stefania Casini, Udo Kier, Alida Valli (EYES WITHOUT A FACE), and Joan Bennett. INFERNO could be considered a kind-of sequel. Incidentally, this is one of many giallos that copies a box-stacking-to-escape-from-a-killer-through-a-window scene originally found in Fulci's A LIZARD IN A WOMAN'S SKIN. This admittedly adds a fine sick-gag twist to it though.
