SUPER 8 (2011 U.S.) D/W/P: J.J. ABRAMS P: BRYAN BURK/STEVEN SPIELBERG
Five boys (Joel Courtney, Riley Griffiths, Zach Mills, Gabriel Basso and firebug Ryan Lee) and a girl (Elle Fanning) are making an amateur zombie movie in a small town (at the end of the 70`s), when they witness a freight train being derailed (awesome crash scene) by a biology teacher (Glynn Turman) in his pick-up truck. Sworn to secrecy, they have captured some startling images on 8mm, and have a small, mysterious cuboid object. Meanwhile the military are moving in, dogs and engines and electronics go missing, and the electricity keeps going out. This retro monster movie has likeable (and foul-mouthed) kid leads, and is mostly rather charming. It`s true that it ultimately offers nothing but re-fried nostalgia, but it`s quite a fun watch, and quality filmmaking throughout. The footage which plays during the end credits was a nice touch. With Kyle Chandler, Ron Eldard, Noah Emmerich and Dan Castellaneta, and fun references to Dick Smith, walkmans, C.B., disco and the Russians.
