THE SIGNALMAN (1976 U.K.) D: LAWRENCE GORDON CLARK W: ANDREW DAVIES P: ROSEMARY HILL
Bernard Lloyd is The Traveller and Denholm Elliott is The Signalman in this curious, ambitious and oddly effective adaptation of a Charles Dickens story for the BBC`s then-annual Ghost Story For Christmas (the first in the series not based on M.R. James). Set mostly at a signalbox situated at the mouth of a tunnel alongside a railway line with steep embankments either side (an eerie and claustrophobic location), it would seem counterproductive for me to attempt to explain the highly ambiguous chain of events. Suffice to say it`s cosy yet unsettling rural British gothic at it`s best (overlooking a typically cheap and laughable train crash simulation utilising a blank screen and sound FX). 40 mins. long. The next year saw STIGMA.
