SCREAM (1996 U.S.) D: WES CRAVEN W: KEVIN WILLIAMSON P: CATHY KONRAD/CARY WOODS
This post-modern slasher movie hit is very good, but critics overpraising it as some kind of masterpiece are setting over-expectant viewers up for dissapointment. Neve Campbell is the teen heroine who's mother was raped and murdered years earlier. The killings start again in her small town community. Craven has lots of fun with numerous red herrings and endless horror film references, but thankfully it all remains the right side of fanboy so is good fun. A character comments on how it's all "like some Wes Carpenter movie". With Drew Barrymore, Skeet Ulrich, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Rose McGowan, Matthew Lillard, Jamie Kennedy, Lina Blair, W. Earl Brown, Liev Schreiber, Henry Winkler and Craven in a stripey jumper. Screenwriter Williamson (and the horror genre) became hot property after this. Sequels followed.
