SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD (2010 U.K. CANADA U.S.) D/P: EDGAR WRIGHT W: MICHAEL BACALL P: NIRA PARK/MARC PLATT/ERIC GITTER
Pilgrim (Michael Cera) is a young man in Toronto who plays bass in a band (who`s songs were composed by Beck, by the way). He falls for the new girl in town (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), but finds he must battle her seven exs in video game-style battles to win her. That`s the basic premise. But with this retro geek chic heavily stylized comedy, it`s all about the presentation (it often mirrors exactly the panels of Bryan Lee O`Malley`s original graphic novel series). The first twenty minutes had me convinced i was going to loathe it with a passion, but there was a process of climatization and in the end i had a pretty good time. It`s not all that, but is kinda fun if you let yourself get carried away (though not as infectious as FLCL, for example). With Ellen Wong, Kieran Culkin, Alison Pill, Mark Webber, Johnny Simmons, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, Brie Larson, Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, the Saito Twins (who`s music was composed by Keigo Oyamada aka Cornelius), Thomas Jane and Clifton Collins Jr. as The Vegan Police, a cameo from O`Malley and so many cultural references it`ll make you vomit!
