RESERVOIR DOGS (1991 U.S.) D/W: QUENTIN TARANTINO P: LAWRENCE BENDER
Tight, well-told and perfectly paced crime movie dealing with a (never seen) diamond heist gone wrong and the chaotic aftermath. Lawrence Tierney (described as looking like The Thing from The Fantastic Four) and his son Chris Penn hire six professionals to pull it off, but one is an undercover cop. Harvey Keitel is White, Steve Buscemi Pink, Tim Roth Orange, Michael Madsen a psychotic Blonde, Tarantino Brown and crime novelist and real life ex-con Eddie Bunker is Blue. Most of it takes place in the warehouse hideout, but Tarantino`s inspired use of music, cutting and ear for quotable dialogue makes it so much more than a filmed stage play. The macho men being emotional slant is worthy of Peckinpah at times. There are references to other movies (and other Tarantino scripts) and a major chunk of the Hong Kong movie CITY ON FIRE is borrowed (including the Mexican stand-off ending). Lawrence Bender has a small part and that`s Steven Wright`s voice on the radio. Keitel co-produced and Monte Hellman was the Executive Producer. The photography is from Andrzej Sekula. You might be sick of hearing about Tarantino`s debut, his follow-up PULP FICTION or the man in general. But don`t forget that this is a very good movie. KAANTE is a Hindi semi-remake from 2002.
