REQUIEM (2005 GERMANY) D/P: HANS-CHRISTIAN SCHMID W: BERND LANGE
Sandra Huller is brilliant in the leading role as a young woman from a highly religious family who moves to an university dorm and tries to lead a normal carefree student life despite bouts of debilitating epilepsy, and the side-effects of her medicine for it. She herself starts to believe that she might be possessed by evil. This excellent and quietly devastating verite movie (with very convincing 70s period detail and photography) is based on the tragic real-life case of Anneliese Michel, who died of malnutrition and dehydration after a year of regular exorcisms in 1976 (in Miltenerg, Germany). With Burghart Klinger as her father. THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE was an Americanized take on the story from the same year, concentrating on the subsequent criminal trial. There was also The Asylum's ANNELIESE: THE EXORCISM TAPES (2011). But this is the one to see. From the Director of 23 (1998). Amon Duul are on the soundtrack, by the way.
