RAN (1985 JAPAN FRANCE) D/W: AKIRA KUROSAWA W: MASATO IDE/HIDEO OGUNI P: MASATO HARA/SERGE SILBERMAN
Lord Ichimoji (Tatsuya Nakadai) has decided to retire, splitting the land and his castles between his three sons (Akira Terao, Jinpachi Nazu and Daisuke Ryu). He refuses to listen to wise words spoken against his plan, and cracks in the family`s loyalties grow to epic proportions over the course of 160 mins. It seems pointless to actually try and determine the "best" of all of Kurosawa`s classics, but there`s no denying the overwhelming brilliance of this reinterpretation of Shakespeare`s King Lear. All the performances are great, but mad old Nakadai and the devious, vengeful Mieko Harada are standout. With Peter (FUNERAL PARADE OF ROSES), Hisashi Igawa, Takeshi Kato, Jun Tazaki, famous Kabuki actor Mansai Nomura (later the star of THE YIN-YANG MASTER) and Hitoshi Ueki. Unmissable.
