QUATERMASS II (enemy from space) (1957 U.K.) D/W: VAL GUEST W: NIGEL KNEALE P: ANTHONY HINDS
The second of Hammer`s Quatermass movies (based on Kneale`s BBC serials) is an ahead-of-it`s-time atmospheric b/w classic. Brian Donlevy is Professor Quatermass who`s had his plans for colonization of the Moon turned down by the goverment. Meanwhile he invesigates a small rural village where several meteorites have been landing. A heavily armed factory that`s supposed to be producing "synthetic food" is in fact the HQ of a diabolical alien invasion. To say anymore would spoil the surprise, especialy since this is a deliberately paced gem that builds up a genuinely disturbing air of tension and foreboding. Often refered to as a cheap INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS knock-off, it`s so much more (and conceived years before that Don Siegel classic). With Marianne Stone, John Stuart, George Merritt, Michael Balfour, Sid James, John Longden, Bryan Forbes, Charles Lloyd Pack, Percy Herbert and Michael Ripper. Hammer hit it big time the same year with the release of THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN and made the excellent QUATERMASS AND THE PIT 10 years later.
