PULP FICTION (1994 U.S.) D/W: QUENTIN TARANTINO W: ROGER AVARY P: LAWRENCE BENDER
After RESERVOIR DOGS Tarantino made this great two-and-a-half-hour crime epic full of humour, violence (not as much as you might have heard), drugs, quotable dialogue (although i`m sure you`ve had enough of it by now) and endless references to other movies. Four old, cliched pulp novel standards (boxer who doesn`t lose the fight, hold-up gone wrong, gangster who can`t sleep with the boss` wife and the disposal of a dead body) are revitalized and interconnected in a non-linear fashion. It`s all pretty entertaining, something worth remembering in the midst of a Tarantino backlash. With John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, Tim Roth, Uma Thurman, Amanda Plummer, Harvey Keitel, Christopher Walken, Ving Rhames, Eric Stoltz, Maria De Medeiros, Peter Greene, Frank Whaley, Rosanna Arquette, Steve Buscemi, Paul Calderon, Alexis Arquette, Julia Sweeney. Lawrence Bender and Tarantino. Scenes with Dick Miller were delted. I remember this being the first movie rated 18 that i sneaked in to see at a theatre in Swansea (when i was 15) and loving it. Choice surf music on the soundtrack (don`t let over-familiarity lead you to forget what a monster of a track Dick Dale`s Misirlou is).
