POSSESSION (1981 FRANCE W. GERMANY) D/W: ANDRZEJ ZULAWSKI W: FREDERIC TUTEN P: MARIE-LAURIE REYRE
For lack of anything to compare it to, consider this a bit like THE BROOD, but with a terminally weird spin on things. Sam Neill returns from a long haul overseas to his wife Isabelle Adjani, only to find that she is cold and strange. At first it seems that she was just having an affair with another guy (Heinz Bennett), but it tuns out that she's given birth to a tentacled monster whom she kills for and can satisfy her sexual cravings more than any man. Adjani (who, along with Neill, acts captivatingly over-the-top) actualy has a dual role and appears topless. Highlights include a messy miscarriage in a subway tunnel, sex scenes with the Carlo Ramabldi designed creature, a funny scene where Neill and Adjani's argument wrecks a coffee shop and the great ending. It's set in Berlin and is from an underrated Polish director. With Margit Carstensen and Carl Duering. I recommend this fascinating artifact in it's full two hours plus cut (beware the 80 min versions).
