PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID (1973 U.S.) D: SAM PECKINPAH W: RUDY WURLITZER P: GORDON CARROLL
What at first may seem like a rambling mess (many think it`s Peckinpah`s most self-indulgent project) soon becomes a formidable, violent chunk of raw, brilliant cinema torn fresh from the carcass. James Coburn is Sheriff Garrett, tracking Billy (Kris Kristofferson). No messing, get the uncut version and see a real master at work. Words can`t describe one of the best westerns ever. Monte Hellman developed the story with Wurlitzer (who wrote his TWO LANE BLACKTOP) and almost directed. Bob Dylan`s soundtrack includes Knockin` On Heaven`s Door. And the cast: Jason Robards, Richard Jaeckel, Wurlitzer, Katy Jurado, Slim Pickens, R.G. Armstrong, Chill Wills, Elisha Cook Jr., Jack Elam, Matt Clark, L.Q. Jones, Dub Taylor, Rita Coolidge, Harry Dean Stanton, Gene Evans, Charles Martin Smith, Barry Sullivan, Paul Fix, John Beck, Richard Bright, Emilio Fernandez, Jeorge Russek, Aurora Cleval, Peckinpah and Dylan. This review refers to a composite of the cinema/video version and the cut tv version with extra (non violent) scenes. Making this just after STRAW DOGS alienated all but Peckipah`s most ardent fans, so his next masterpiece, BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA was badly misunderstood and ill-received.
