ONIBABA (the hole) (1964 JAPAN) D/W: KANETO SHINDO P: HSIAO ITOYA/TAMOTSU MINATO/SETSUO NOTO
One of the few Japanese horror movies of it`s time to be widely circulated in the West, this is a great looking, atmospheric revenge tale involving two peasant women (an old woman and her daughter-in-law) who resort to killing wandering samurai (by letting them fall down a hole) and stealing their armour in the Tokugawa period. A demon mask is pivotal to the plot. Brilliant, scary and worth watching if only for Kiyomi Kuroda`s amazing b/w photography. With Nobuko Otowa, Jitsuko Yoshimura, Kei Sato, Taiji Tonoyma, Jukichi Uno, Sumesho Matsumoto and Fudeko Nakata. Apparently it inspired William Friedkin to make THE EXORCIST. Otowa and Sato were also in the director`s KURONEKO.
