ONE ARMED SWORDSMAN (duk bei diy; du bei dao) (1967 HONG KONG) D/W: CHANG CHEH W: I. KUANG P: RUNME SHAW
During the latter half of the 60`s director Chang (and frequent collaborator Kuang) made a series of modern kung fu films for Shaw Brothers that really brought the form up-to-date. And before anyone had heard of Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan, Wang Yu was the star that packed them into theatres. This production is important to martial arts movie fans because it was the first time that Wang Yu tried out his much duplicated one-arm persona. After having one arm sliced off, he must learn to fight with the other. Unfortunately, entertainment and coreography (by liu Chia Liang and Tang Chia) wise, the film has dated badly. And the stilted fight sequences are lost amidst a sea of melodrama. Not to be disregarded, but difficult to enjoy. With Chiao Chiao, Tin Fung, Ku Feng, Wong Chung Shun, Liu Chia Liang, Yeung Chi Hung, Mars, Fan Mei Sheng, Tang Chia, Wong Kwong Yue, Cliff Lok, Kok Lee Yan, Yen Shi Kwan, Yuen Cheung Yan, Yuen Woo Ping and Chan Chuen. RETURN OF THE ONE ARMED SWORDSMAN followed. Wang Yu later directed himself in the incredible ONE ARMED BOXER movies and (with two arms) the excellent THE CHINESE BOXER.
