OIL CITY CONFIDENTIAL (dr. feelgood:...) (2009 UK) D: JULIEN TEMPLE P: STEPHEN MALIT
Surprisingly fascinating and fun (BBC backed)documentary on pre-punk pub-rockers Dr. Feelgood, from Essex's oil refinery-lined Canvey Island ("the Thames Delta"!). All surviving members (including John Martin, John B. Sparkes and Gypie Mayo) are interviewed, and there is archive stuff of the late lead singer Lee Brilleaux (and his widow), but guitarist Wilko Johnson dominates, which is in fact no bad thing. If nothing else, this will leave you with a real soft spot for the eccentric, wired raconteur par excellence. Of particular interest is the local detail, like the devastating 1953 floods in Essex. And Feelgood fans will love the priceless live footage, and pinpointing of musical influences (The Shadows, Johnny & The Pirates, Howlin' Wolf). Other interviewees include manager Chris Fenwick, Jools Holland, Richard Hell, Glen Matlock, Alison Moyet, Joe Strummer and Suggs from Madness. Film clips are from BRIGHTON ROCK (1947) , ODD MAN OUT (1947), THE CONCRETE JUNGLE (1960) and PAYROLL (1961).
