OCTAMAN (1971 U.S.) D/W: HARRY ESSEX W: LEIGH CHAPMAN P: MICHAEL KRAIKE
An intro narration explains how a humanoid shaped octopus is a local legend in Latin America. Some scientists, a businessman hoping to sell the "half man, half sea serpent" as a circus attraction and a native guide set out to find and capture it. The creature (a result of atomic radiation maybe) kills by wrapping it`s tentacle arms around it`s victims. This ridicilous (and infamous) horror movie is mostly mind-numbing time-wasting and it isn`t even that laughable, but it is worth sitting through for the Octaman monster costume (containing Buck Kartalian) co-designed by Rick Baker. Jeff Morrow (THIS ISLAND EARTH and others) appears briefly, there`s a very fast day-to-night transformation and the ending is abrupt and awful. Essential viewing for masochistic bad movie fans. With Kerwin Mathews and Reed Morgan. Essex is most famous for writing CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON and also made THE CREMATORS.
