NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968 U.S.) D/W: GEORGE A. ROMERO W: JOHN (A.) RUSSO P: RUSSEL STEINER/KARL HARDMAN
One of the few recognized horror classics of yesteryear that can still scare the living shit out of you. Russ Steiner says "they`re coming to get you Barbara" and they do, and the suspense never lets up. Creepy-looking walking corpses roam the countryside as Duane Jones, Marilyn Eastman, Hardman and Judith O`Dea barricade themsleves in from the flesh-eaters. Despite being in b/w, the scenes of gut-munching are far more gruelling and gory looking than the more graphic BLOOD FEAST (a completely different kind of groundbreaking 60`s horror). The "shoot `em in the head" ending is brilliant. With Kyra Schon, Keith Wayne, Judith Riley, Bill Hinzman and Romero and Russo. Followed by two official sequels (DAWN and DAY) and endless imitations and rip-offs (to this day), and two remakes and an unnecessary fake "Director`s Cut". None of them come close. The soundtrack, by the way is lifted from the classic TEENAGERS FROM OUTER SPACE!
