THE NAME OF THE ROSE (le nom de la rose; il nome della rosa; der name der rose) (1986 FRANCE ITALY W. GERMANY) D: JEAN-JACQUES ANNAUD W: ANDREW BIRKIN/GERARD BRACH/HOWARD FRANKLIN/ALAIN GODARD P: BERND EICHINGER
In 1327 Sean Connery and young protege Christian Slater travel to a remote abbey famed for it's vast library. Christian corruption is uncovered when a series of murders occur. Based on Umberto Eco's novel, this is an above-average mystery movie that's hampered by overlength (although to be fair it never gets boring). No great shakes, but worth watching. With F. Murray Abraham, Elya Bashin, Michael Lonsdale, Ron Perlman, Donald O'Brien, Leopoldo Trieste, Vernon Dobtcheff, Pete Berling, Gianni Rizzo and Maurizio Merli. Whoever was responsible for the casting kept an eye out for odd faces.
