MY SON, MY SON, WHAT HAVE YE DONE (place of the violence) (2009 U.S. GERMANY) D/W: WERNER HERZOG W: HERBERT GOLDER P: ERIC BASSETT
Troubled, mother-dominated Michael Shannon stabs his mother (Grace Zabriskie) with an old sword, then hides out in his San Diego home (with a lovely cactus garden) as Homicide Detective Willem Dafoe (who`s very low-key and funny) tries to figure out the next move out on the street. Flashbacks reveal the bizarre turn-of-events that may have led here. Very loosely based on the real-life Mark Yavorsky case, it`s an interesting companion piece to Herzog`s BAD LIEUTENANT movie. Both are not entirely succesful but different and engaging takes on genre filmmaking, gleefully subverting audience expectations and presenting us with arresting, surreal imagery. They could be considered more accomplished and less trashy ventures into territory that Ulli Lomell`s films once inhabited. Chloe Sevigny plays Shannon`s fiancee, Udo Kier is a small-time theatre Director and Brad Dourif a racist, homophobic ostrich farmer. With Michael Pena, Loretta Devine and Verne Troyer. The score is by Ernst Reijseger, and the soundtrack also includes the fantastic zither-backed gospel of Washington Phillips. Parts were shot in China, Mexico and Peru. Executive Producer David Lynch "presents".
