MESA OF LOST WOMEN (attack of the spider women) (1952 U.S.) D: RON ORMOND D/W: HERBERT TEVOS W: ORVILLE H. HAMPTON (uncredited) P: MELVIN GORDON/WILLIAM PERKINS
This sometimes catatonic yet irresistable 69 min. b/w cut 'n' paste job is Tevos footage rescued by Ormond. Lyle Talbot narrates a flashback by Allan Nixon (as a survivor of a plane crash), found wandering in the Mexican "desert of death". Jackie Coogan is a mad doctor creating tarantula women in a cave laboratory on the titular mountaintop. Exotic-looking beauty Tandra Quinn is the main creature, who does a weird dance in a bar. Monster tarantulas are very briefly glimpsed. Harmon Stevens stares a lot as an escaped mental patient with a gun. With Mona McKinnon, George Barrows (the ROBOT MONSTER), Richard Travis, Angelo Rossitto, future screenwriter Dean Riesner, Dolores Fuller and Katherine Victor (from Jerry Warren movies). You may recognize the annoying/wonderful flamenco guitar and piano music that was re-used for Ed Wood's JAIL BAIT (it's by Hoyt S. Curtin). "Bad" movie fans should be more aware of this. Talbot`s narration is almost Ed Woodian. Howco released it. Ormond hated it, and it`s true that it doesn`t quite fit his ouevre (his next feature was UNTAMED MISTRESS, for comparison).
