MAX HEADROOM: 20 MINUTES INTO THE FUTURE (1984 U.K.) D/W: ROCKY MORTON/ANNABEL JANKEL W: STEVE ROBERTS/GEORGE STONE P: PETER WAGG
If you (like me) grew up during the 80`s then you can`t have missed Max Headroom, a supposedly computer-generated human head that stuttered and wisecracked that was eventually used to promote products like Coca-Cola (and had a hit single/music video with The Art Of Noise). What i didn`t realise until many years later was that the origin of the concept (this hour-long made-for-tv featurette) was ahead-of-it`s-time satirical cyberpunk sci-fi exellence. In a dystopian future ruled by the tv networks, the biggest company try and stop viewers from changing channels with the use of compressed, sublimial three second "blipverts", despite the fact that they cause particularly inactive couch-potatoes to explode. Matt Frewer is a renegade news reporter who uncovers the conspiracy with the help of assistant Amanda Pays. He also becomes Headroom (under lots of impressive make-up), a subversive wisecracking figure on a small, rival run-from-a-junkyard tv station. With William Morgan Sheppard. The concept later went on to the American ABC network for a short-lived tv series in 1987. The first episode was a remake of this. Worth your backtracking to check this out.
