MARK OF THE VAMPIRE (1935 U.S.) D/P: TOD BROWNING W: GUY ENDORE/BERNARD SCHUBERT P: E.J. MANNIX (uncredited)
Apart from a few tantalizing stills (assembled into a makeshift reconstruction by AMC) Browning`s LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT remains lost. What we do have though is this decent (if overated and dated) remake. Bela Lugosi (who isn`t in it much) stars with Carrol Borland as his daughter (the real star) who creeps around scaring people while Lionel Barrymore (as the Van Helsing character) and Lionel Atwill as a cop investigate in vain. With Elizabeth Allen, Jean Hersholt, Donald Meek, Ivan F. Simpson, Holmes Herbert, Michael Visaroff, Lionel Belmore, Robert Greig, Doris Lloyd, Eily Malyon, Torben Meyer, Henry Stephenson, Egon Brecher, Christian Rub and Zeffie Tilburn. The celebrated surprise ending is to my mind simply annoying. It`s approx. one hour long and James Wong Howe`s photography is exceptional. Browning made the amazing THE DEVIL DOLL next and then ended his fascinating career with the odd MIRACLES FOR SALE.
