THE LULLABY OF BARELAND (1964 US) D: MANUEL S. CONDE W: JOE JONES P: LEROY GRIFFITH
I think there may be two separate versions of this nudie-cutie, but have not been able to confirm it. This is what I saw, first: a suburban guy who ignores his wife goes to see a burlesque show, which includes a weird comedy routine with dated baggy-pants comedians, and star attraction Virginia Bell (from the previous year's BELL, BARE & BEAUTIFUL, also produced by Griffith, who owns the burlesque theatre seen here). We hear the guy's corny wisecracks. In Part 2 (I guess these were also split into short subjects for maximum profits) the wife from earlier goes to a nudist camp in The Beatlettes Go Nudist. She narrates (and we hear some awesome bongo music) as we take the usual look around a nudist camp (one chick on a see-saw has a Beatles wig, to justify the title). One wonders what raincoaters wanking in the audience made of the part where some fine topless female trampolining is interrupted by a naked little boy (!) who does some tricks. The star in this segment is burlesque legend Ann Howe also in 1967's STRANGE RAMPAGE), and there's also Dolores Carlos. The man and wife meet at home, assured that the other doesn't know about their secret life in a neat ending that wraps it all up at 57 mins. However, other reviews mention an alternate cut that seems to be missing the final wrap-up, but does feature a third short segment entitled The Super's Dream, in which a janitor falls asleep and imagines auditioning topless beauties. As usual, non-connoisseurs of the pre-hardcore nudies will find little of interest, while fans like myself will thoroughly enjoy the surreal banality, a peek at a long-gone era. I loved it. Apparently the first feature of Cuban refugee Conde (who also shot it). He also directed NYMPHS (ANONYMOUS) (1968), but could he also be aka Zoltan G. Spencer of TERROR AT ORGY CASTLE (1971) fame? I think we should be told.
