LAUGH, CLOWN, LAUGH (1928 U.S.) D/P: HERBERT BRENON W: ELIZABETH MEEHAN P: IRVING G. THALBERG
In this classic b/w silent tragedy, Lon Chaney plays Flik the Clown. 14 year-old Loretta Young is the abandoned little girl that he raises to be a tightrope walker, and falls in love with. Nils Ashter is a wealthy playboy with a laughing disorder who also falls for Young. Adapted from a play by David Belasco and Tom Cushing, it has a contrived, predictable plot, but is beautifully told. The ending, involving a death-defying slide trick is pretty powerful stuff. With Bernard Siegel, Cissy Fitzgerald, Gwen Lee, Leo Feodoroff and Emmett King. James Wong Howe was the cinematographer.
