KISS ME DEADLY (1955 U.S.) D/P: ROBERT ALDRICH W: I.A. BEZZERIDES
Apparently Mickey Spillane doesn`t much like it, but this is the best screen adaptation of a Mike Hammer novel ever, and one of Aldrich`s finest. Ralph Meeker stars as the tough anti-hero private detective who picks up fleeing asylum runaway Cloris Leachman running down a deserted highway at night. This sets off a serpentine investigation and the tracking of an unknown McGuffin. Hard, cynical and more b/w noir "fun" than you can handle, this is a personal favourite to be watched again and again. With Albert Dekker, Jack Elam, Strother Martin, Marjorie Bennett, Fortunio Bonanova, Jack Lambert, Percy Helton, James Seay, John George and Leonard Mudie. Both REPO MAN and PULP FICTION have overt references to this classic.
