THE KILLER (sacred knives of vengeance; da sha shou; daai saai sau) (1972 HONG KONG) D: CHOR YUEN W: GWOK GA P: RUN RUN SHAW
Chung Wa is a knife expert who returns to his hometown only to be tricked by opium traffickers (who turn out to be Japanese gunrunners too!) into fighting a kung fu school trying to keep the blighters at bay. Childhood friend and Goverment Inspector Chin Han vouches for him, but the villains frame Chung for murder and try and turn them against each other. It`s a little slow-going, with too much romantic triangle melodrama featuring singer Wang Ping, but stick with this Shaw Bros. release for the final 15 mins, which is brutal and bloody basher heaven for genre fans, including Ku Feng wielding a katana. With Chiang Nan, Cheng Miu, Yeung Chi-Hing, Cheng Lui, Cheng Kang-Yeh, Wang Kuang-Yu, Yuen Yat-Choh, Yen Shi-Kwan, Yuen Shun-Yi, San Kuai, Ho Pak-Kwong, Fung Hak-On, Huang Ha, Sai Gwa-Pau, Danny Chow, Wong Mei, Brandy Yuen, Lee Ho, Phillip Ko Fei, Wong Pau-Gei, Wong Shu-Tong, San Sin, Lo Wai, Ko Hung, Lee Chiu, Chan Dik-Hak, Lau Jun-Fai, Liu Wai, Yi FUng, Tony Lee, Law Keung, Alan Chan Kwok-Kuen, Kwan Yan, Kong Chuen, Ng Yuen-Fan, Cheung Sek-Aau, Cheung Chi-Ping, Chan Siu-Gai, Bak Yu, Lam Siu, Cheung Chok-Chow, Ting Tung and Action Coreographers Yuen Cheung-Yan and Yuen Woo-Ping.
