JUDGE DREDD (1995 U.S.) D: DANNY CANNON W: WILLIAM WISHER/STEVEN E. DE SOUZA/MICHAEL DE LUCA/JOHN FASANO (uncredited) P: CHARLES M. LIPPINCOTT/BEAU L. MARKS
After THE YOUNG AMERICANS, Cannon went Hollywood to helm this big-budget adaption of the cult UK comic character found in 2000 A.D. comics. It's set in the futuristic Mega City and the disgraced Dredd must walk through "The Cursed Earth" (a desolate desert). There's lots of generic action and explosions. Stallone is a bad Dredd and says "I am the law" all wrong. Rob Schneider adds painful comic relief and Diane Lane is a psychic judge. Fans of the comic book were outraged that their hero was unmasked, but there's more serious things to worry about. Like if evil Armand Assante is cloned from the exact D.N.A as Dredd, why don't they look anything alike? I thought that the nasty, violent edge of the comics was needed to do this properly, but they toned it down way too much. With Jurgen Prochnow, Max Von Sydow, Joanna Miles, Joan Chen, Balthazar Getty, Ian Dury and an uncredited James Remar and Scott Wilson and the voice of James Earl Jones. An A.B.C. Warrior is an in-joke for comic fans.
