JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN (1971 U.S.) D/W: DALTON TRUMBO P: BRUCE CAMPBELL
Timothy Bottoms is a World War I casualty of war without arms, legs, speech or hearing. The living corpse remembers his life, dreams and tries to communicate with nurse Diane Varsi. What could have been pretentious and dreary is in fact a superior black comedy with an effective anti-war message. Jason Robards is Bottoms' father and Donald Sutherland is Christ! With Don "Red" Barry, Peter Brocero, Anthony Geary, Charles McGraw, David Soul (STARSKY AND HUTCH) and Trumbo (who also wrote the novel on which this is based). The following year Sutherland appeared in the F.T.A. filmed benefit that was inspired by the novel. Trumbo's next screenplay was for the interesting and underappreciated EXECUTIVE ACTION.
