ISLAND OF THE LIVING DEAD (island of the dead; l`isola dei morti viventi) (2006 ITALY) D/W: "VINCENT DAWN" (BRUNO MATTEI) W: ANTONIO TENTORI W/P: GIANNI PAOLUCCI
Treasure hunters in a storm wash-up on an uncharted island. They find ruins full of the gut-munching living dead. It has something to do with a sunken Spanish galleon and a virus, and characters have visions and hallucinate. A confusing shot-on-video throwback to Italian zombie movies of the late 70`s/early 80`s, and you get the feeling that if it had been shot on celluloid and had a pumping gothic soundtrack it could have been satisfying eurotrash. But the flat look works against it, and it`s ultimately pretty boring. With several overt nods to expected genre classics like ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS and NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, but is the mysterious lute-lpaying figure an obscure reference to THE CURIOUS DR. HUMPP?! It stars Yvette Yzon (in several of the late Mattei`s last productions), and utilises what appears to be speeded-up silent movie footage (!?) during a disaster scene. Shot in the Philippines. Dedicated to the late Mike Monty. Believe it or not, there was a sequel.
