INCITE MILL: NANOKAN NO DEATH GAME (tv show) (2010 JAPAN) D: HIDEO NAKATA W: SATOSHI SUZUKI P: ATSUYUSHI SHIMODA/TOSHIYA NOMURA/RYUTA INOUE/NAOTO HATAKEYAMA
Ten strangers (five women, five men) find themselves trapped at a remote facility after answering an add for a ridiculously well-paid "part-time job". The rules are that they must stay in their rooms after 10 p.m. (the corridor is patrolled by a robot guard), and the game ends after seven days, or after there are only two survivors (implying some kind of conflict will ensue). Sure enough one guy ends up dead (comedian Masanori Ishii, who's terrible, as are several of the other performers struggling with a lousy script), and the train of paranoid homicides is set in motion (each person having a weapon of some sort secreted in their rooms, which have no locks). There are vague nods towards classic mystery writers like Agatha Christie, Conan Doyle etc. but that lacks substance, and everything is painted into a corner that can only be surmounted by unlikely, illogical and unsatisfying twists and narrative cheats. Also rather boring from the mid-point mark onwards (and rather irritating). A weak, already dated sub-plot has the video monitored events streamed online. Tatsuya Fujiwara (basically doing the same thing he did in the previous year's hit KAIJI) and Haruka Ayase star, with alky Kinya Kitaoji, Satomi Ishihara, Shinji Takeda, Nagisa Katahira, Aya Hirayama, Tsuyoshi Abe, Takuro Oono and the voice of comedian Yuukii Himura. Based on a novel by Honobu Yonezawa. Nakata's UK-lensed CHATROOM was released the same year.
